The following positions are available at the Helen Keller National Center in NY unless otherwise noted. Interviews are by appointment only.

 

Senior Instructor - Communications Learning Center

Full time, 35 hours per week. Masters Degree in Education of the Blind/Visually Impaired or Rehabilitation Teacher of the Blind required. Teaching certification strongly preferred. Two years of experience in teaching. Knowledge of sign language and language development preferred. Evaluates base level of communication, braille, language, math, and reading skills of students. Evaluates ability to use adaptive equipment. Suggest, plans, and provides training, as needed, in methods and devices of language communication, math, college preparation, aids and devices, banking and budgeting, and braille. Category IA.

Porter

Full time, 35 hours per week, afternoon/evening shift. Must be able to lift 50 pounds; to provide cleaning services necessary to maintain the interior of the building in a clean and sanitary condition; to assist in exterior cleaning as needed; assist in cleaning sidewalks, driveways and parking areas of snow or debris when required; assists in wrapping and shipping packages and items to be mailed or delivered to outside companies; removes trash and debris to outside containers. Category A.

Supervisor - Case Management

Full time, 35 hours per week. Provide case management services to consumers who are deaf-blind including supervising and evaluating work performance of case management staff. Assist with coordination of services offered by consulting clinical social worker and psychiatrist by regular review of consumer clinical needs, counseling and case management interventions. Chair departmental meetings; regularly review schedule and guide case management staff with obtaining classes appropriate and consistent with consumer training needs.

EDUCATION:  Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling.  CRC is required or must be obtained with 18 months of employment.

Must have knowledge of the vocational rehabilitation system.

EXPERIENCE:  Minimum of five years experience in related field required with prior supervisory experience. Proficiency in American Sign Language preferred; knowledge of braille and other preferred methods of communication utilized by persons who are deaf-blind required or must be developed within 2 years. Skills in team building and management a plus. Knowledge of deaf and deaf-blind culture required.

Some travel required (local and out of state when necessary).

Senior Instructor - Orientation and Mobility

Full time, 35 hours per week. Provides instruction in safe and efficient travel skills specifically indoor techniques including sighted guide, self protection, and cane skills on campus to deaf-blind people. Evaluates progress of students and submits scheduled written reports. Lessons are given both day and evening and the use of one's personal vehicle in transporting students during lessons may be required.

EXPERIENCE: Two years experience in teaching orientation and mobility.

EDUCATION: Master's degree in Orientation and Mobility. AER certifiable.

Knowledge of braille and American Sign Language a plus. Must possess a valid New York State Driver’s license

Assistant Program Advisor - Destiny Home

Job Location - DUNES LANE, SANDS POINT, NY

Destiny is a community-based home shared by 5 individuals who are deaf-blind.

Full time, 40 hours per week, day and evening shifts. Responsible for the direct supervision of staff in Destiny Home, (our Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD) residential setting) under the direction of the program advisor. Provide behavior support to individuals who are deaf-blind with intellectual disabilities.

Experience-bachelor's degree (B. A.) in psychology or related field such as special education from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of one year experience working in an OMRDD setting. Minimum of one year experience supporting individuals with behavioral challenges.  Supervisory experience preferred. Experience writing and training staff in the implementation of behavior support plans required. Knowledge of OMRDD regulations and policies preferred.

TEMPORARY ASSIGNMENT: 3 MONTHS

Life Coach/Habilitation Specialist - Evening shift

 

Job Location - DUNES LANE, SANDS POINT, NY

 

Destiny is a community-based home shared by 5 individuals who are deaf-blind.

Full time, 40 hours per week, evening shift, Monday – Friday. Paid sleep-ins required.

EXPERIENCE: associate's degree or completion of two years of college (60 credits), preferably within education or health related field of study AND one year experience in work with blind, deaf, deaf-blind, or individuals with severe disabilities individuals

OR

High school diploma and four years of paid experience as a residence/group home aide working with individuals who have intellectual disabilities.

Knowledge of American Sign Language a plus. Must possess a valid New York State driver’s license. Category D

Instructor/Support Service Provider (SSP)/Assistant - San Francisco, CA

Part time, 21 hours per week, based out of 214 Van Ness Ave., San Francisco, CA 94102. If you are interested in working within the deaf-blind community, are flexible, enjoy travel, have a desire to learn, and are open to varied experiences this position has great possibilities for you.

This position will work directly with our Technology Development and Training Specialist, who is deaf-blind and communicates using tactual American Sign Language. The assistant position will include opportunities to accompany the Specialist to meetings, workshops, conferences and training programs for consumers who are deaf-blind both nationally and internationally. As a part-time Support Service Provider (SSP), the assistant will act as his “eyes and ears” facilitating social opportunities, interpreting phone calls, providing information about the visual and auditory environment, etc. The assistant will gain, or enhance existing, skills in the area of Adaptive Technology Training with individuals who are deaf-blind and will provide needed support, enabling adaptive technology services to be expanded throughout the United States.

Bachelor’s degree in computer science required. A background in interpreting or interpreter education is preferred and a minimum of one year of experience working with deaf and hard of hearing, blind and visually impaired, or deaf-blind individuals is required.

Knowledge of personal computers, hardware components, current technology, and educational software required. Knowledge about adaptive equipment for learners with low vision or totally blind (i.e., refreshable braille displays, screen readers, screen magnification) is also preferred. Must have strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, as well as e-mail and the Internet. Strong writing skills including a good command of the English language, and knowledge of American Sign Language is required. Knowledge of braille and other methods of communication used by individuals who are deaf-blind is preferred.
